Textiles and Their Story: 2022 Textile Conservation Exhibition
Sub-title: Reflections of the Present. Records of the Past.

Textiles speak to the conditions and directions of our daily lives, as well as serving as woven records of our past. Within antique textiles, we can spy the artistry and creativity of prior generations. These textiles are an open book of sorts, ones from which we can make educated guesses regarding the conditions and currents of the relative time period. Between the warp and weft, the history of the evolution of human civilization is woven for us the decipher.
Taiwan’s textile artifacts are far-ranging in form and function: from museum embroidery collections, religious banners, and folk clothing to parasols of Nanguan and Beiguan music groups and the traditional clothing and woven works of ethnic groups. Each textile piece has its own unique beauty and craftsmanship. As cultural conservation trends have entered the mainstream, many of Taiwan’s representative textile artifacts have been designated as cultural heritage. Examples would be the Beigang Flying Dragon Troupe’s Dragon Banners, the violet-colored Xin Fang Chun Hang Eight Immortals Banner, the replicaof the Republic of Formosa Yellow Tiger Flag, an embroidered scarf and shawl of the Taivoan indigenous people, and a copper bell vest of the Atayal people.
However, textiles are made from organic materials. As time passes, the color gradually faded and the fibers become increasingly brittle. They also easily deteriorates by the factors of light, temperature, humidity, micro-organisms, insects, and air pollutants, etc.. Also not a few textile artifacts deteriorates due to poor conservation knowledge and management..
Scientific examination and analysis is one of the methods to provide suitable resolutions to conserve artifacts..The Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, possesses a research institute which equips national-level facilities specialized in scientific method and restoration technology research of cultural heritage conservation. The Institute also devoted to cultivating professional development in conservation sector. Scientific methods has been conducted to analyze deteriorating factors of artifacts. Associating with traditional craftsmanship, textile conservation guideline which suits Taiwan has been suggested to apply for conservation treatment and maintenance management.
